Zoom Q3 null with 2X Optical Zoom 2.4 LCD Screen, Blue
- OK so first I want to start with a response to some of the people who ordered this product and wrote some negative reviews because of the video quality that it takes: Why don\'t you, DO YOUR RESEARCH, before you order something, and then complain that it doesn\'t do what you expected it would. This is not really a hand held camcorder as most people think, but actually a digital audio recorder with the capability of taking video. It is designed strictly for people in the music business who want to record their performances with a great sound and mediocre video so those performances can be shared with the world on YouTube or used for personal review or auditions. So if you want something that you can use mostly for taking videos of your kids soccer practice or your cats, this is definitely not the right device for you.Now about the product:In the upper front you have the camera lens and a small red LED light directly underneath, which shows you when it is recording plus a build in speaker on the left side of the camera. The entire bottom part is where the slide to open door for the batteries is, and on the very top of course, are the two stereo directional condenser microphones. The back part is dominated by a decent size LCD screen with the following controls underneath:Left to right: play, menu, delete. On the bottom you have a nice big REC button with a red dot on it and a fast forward and backward and up and down volume buttons positioned in a cross pattern around it.On the left side you have:DC5V 1A AC power outlet, headphone or line in jack, switch for choosing between camera and audio modes, microphone gain control, and the power button. On the right side you have:build in USB 2.0 connector, TV out jack, and the SD HC card slot. (don\'t worry despite the fancy name, this is just a standard SD card which you can buy in any drug store now days)On the bottom you have a standard tripod mount and three tiny rubberized legs.THE GOOD:1. I purchased it directly from Amazon and got it right at the estimated time. I really liked the option of being able to track your purchase as it travels through the mail. Also Amazon offers one of the best prices out there, because at $140 plus free super saver shipping it is a great deal since most online stores sells it for around $200.2. The build quality is nice. Regardless made entirely out of hard plastic, it feels sturdy and not toy like.3. The LCD screen offers nice clear picture with good color and contrast balance which is great for previewing your test recording takes in order to make sure that everything is where it should be. It also has a small build in speaker in the front which by no means gives an accurate representation of the audio quality but it is a nice touch if you just want to quickly check if it is recording. For actually hearing a realistic version of what your recording would sound like, you need to use head phones by simply hooking them up to the 3.5mm headphone jack on the side of the device. Make sure you use a good quality headphones because you can be disappointed what you hear if your headphones do not provide good sound. I had this problem happened to me, so be advised and try a different set of headphones before writing a negative review about the sound quality.4. The device comes with a wind screen protector for your mics, which is great for outdoor recordings, 2 AAA standard batteries, soft cloth caring pouch (which offers no protection against hits and drops, but it is great to keep it clean and protect the LCD screen and camera lens from scratching), and a 2GB SD SanDisk card, which is made in Japan!! The card comes with some free software for editing and previewing your videos on it, and a user manual. (**Please note that, the attached SD card has nowhere near enough space for a decent length recording session. You will not get more than 35 minutes from it, if you use the highest video and audio quality setting. My advice is to invest a few more bucks and get another SD card that is at least 8GB.)5. The Zoom Q3 is amazingly easy to use and ready to go right out of the box. The visual menu is very well designed and easy to understand with out the need of consulting with the user manual. However, I still advise you to do so if you are unfamiliar with some of the terms being used, such as gain control, lo cut, PCM, etc. The home screen shows you information about:remaining recording time available to you, battery life, and left and right microphone levels on the bottom, and:status, microphone gain level, and audio format, on the top of the screen.Last but not least it has a build in USB cable, which makes it very easy to connect to peripherals without the need of carrying an extra USB cable with you.6. The device itself is lightening fast. It powers up from off to completely ready to record in less than 5 seconds!! The menu response is also very quick as well as the playback and erase functions. (I am not sure if this would change with a bigger size SD card since I am yet to get one)7. Perhaps the most important thing for people reading this review however, is the sound quality and here I am pleased to say, Zoom does not fail to deliver. You have a wide selection of different setting for the quality of your audio with the lowest being: MP3 48kbps and the highest being: PCM 48kHz 24bit. Now before you react to that let me say that this is the highest audio quality WITH video, if you turn the video off the highest audio quality goes up to: PCM 96kHz 24bit. I am not sure why you can not record video with this sound setting, but I can assure you the other one is sufficient enough. I purchased this device in order to make audition videos for myself and it works great. Since I play trombone, I was a little concerned that it may lack the lows, necessary to represent the sound of the trombone to the fullest, but once again Zoom delivers. With this device being used mostly by rock bands and guitar players, I am pleased to say that it works just as great for brass players and classical musicians in general as well. It is however necessary to adjust the mic level to low, in order to avoid distortion of the recording for instruments like, trombone or trumpet. Another tip for brass players is also to experiment with the position of your bell. I find it best not to point directly at the microphone, but this all depends on the actual hall or room you are recording in, so make sure to use a lot of different positions and pick the best one that works for you.NOW THE BAD:So, even though the Zoom Q3 is a great bang for your bucks it does have a few flows.1. Let me start with the obvious. NO MICROPHONE IN JACK. Come on Zoom!!! This is perhaps the most important thing a device of this sort to have. I personally could have gotten without the build in USB cable and even the build in speaker but a mic in jack on a device like this is a must. (In their next model, the Zoom Q3HD they fixed that issue, so if you are not on a budget like me, and want to spent an extra $150-$200 I suggest you do.)2. I am a bit disappointed of the microphone gain setting. There are only three different settings available: low, high, and auto. I wish there was the option to manually control to mic gain to the desired sensibility, since just three basic setting are just not enough.3. Another huge disappointment was the lack of build in rechargeable battery. Why Zoom??? Why? You basically have two options here: Either keep buying AAA standard batteries (which I strongly do not recommend) or buy a set of NI-MH rechargeable batteries. This thing sucks the juice out of its batteries amazingly fast. On a full charge I get no more than about 1 hour and 20 minutes of video recording from NI-MH batteries, so you do the math if you have to keep buying AAA\'s. Next dumb thing zoom did is that you can not charge the batteries inside the device, which on its own is not such a big deal however, every time when you take out the batteries to charge them and then put them back in, you will find out that you have to adjust the date again. So I find this to be quite annoying.4. If you remember from my description above, there is an AC adapter in jack, BUT, yes you guessed it right, the Zoom Q3 comes with no AC power adapter! What?!?!? I can buy a $20 electric hair trimmer that comes with one, and even have a build in rechargeable battery, but a $200 device (which is the usual list price), does not come with one and you have to purchase it separately. Again, a very cheap and actually unsuccessful attempt from Zoom to make a few extra bucks since you can buy a much cheaper third party power adapter that will work just as well s the original one. This sort of reminds me of Apple iPhone 4, which came with a micro SD card and literally days later there were a bunch of youtube videos showing you how to cut your existing SIM card in order to make it work by simply using kitchen scissors.5. Finaly, a camera lens protector would have been a nice feature as well since the position of it makes it very easy to scratch if you are not careful. The reason for this is that when you want to connect your device to your computer for example, you have to put it flat on its front which expose the camera lens to what ever hard surface is underneath. I suggest you use the carrying pouch as a cushion on the surface underneath, to protect the lens.CONCLUSION:Pros:-Great value for the money-very compact and easy to carry around-Good build quality-Superb sound recording quality, extremely easy to use, and fast operating system.Cons:-no microphone/line in jack-No rechargeable battery-no AC adapter-unable to manually adjust the microphone gainOn the end, despite the negative things this still is a great little device to have. You simply can not find a cheaper thing out there with the capabilities of the Zoom Q3 which makes it great buy for all of those starving musicians on a tight budget.
- I purchased the Zoom Q3 after seeing it on Amazon at a very good price. My reasons for purchase were primarily to record myself playing guitar, to record music at concerts and clinics etc., and because I grew tired of using my (very nice) android phone to capture completely unusable audio. To record myself, I place the Q3 in front of my amplifier and record audio only or use both the video and audio when I want to watch myself at a later time. I have been very happy with the results thus far.The audio quality is as high as 96kHz (24-bit) WAV for audio-only recording and as high as 48kHz (24-bit) WAV in video mode. There are manual controls for the mic features and sound quality etc., but I\'ve only used it on auto mode as of yet and it has performed impressively. While testing it, I even cranked up the stereo in my car and recorded a full song by holding the Q3 in the air in audio only mode. I listened to it on the Q3 through headphones, and on my computer after uploading it and was surprised at the quality. The video mode is adequate in places that have decent lighting but it isn\'t great in a bar/club situation with poor lighting. The digital zoom won\'t bring you much closer to the action and will degrade the video quality to a degree so it is probably best to get as close as possible while filming and not counting on zooming to get good footage. My first time filming my friend\'s band at a dive bar was impressive overall. It was pretty dark and they were loud but the video turned out pretty well and the sound was excellent. It is very simple to use. I didn\'t fiddle with any settings, I just sat in front of the band and filmed on auto mode.It comes with a 2GB SD card but I now have a 4GB card which gives close to 1.5 hours of video and close to 3 hours of audio recording at the highest quality settings. It uses 2AA batteries. It can take alkaline or Ni-MH rechargeable batteries which I now use. I realized that I would be going through alkaline batteries often (2 hrs of video/4 hrs audio) so I bought an Energizer NiMH battery charger that comes with 4 AA batteries. I keep 2 in the Q3 and 2 as spares which works out great and saves money. It comes with a wind screen, has a built in USB cable and comes with software that can be used to edit clips, add effects and upload directly to You Tube. It is pretty basic software but seems to work well. The ability to trim clips is limited to the beginning and ending of clips but not in between which would be useful. My bottom line:If high definition video is a must for your needs than the Zoom Q3 isn\'t for you. You will do better with the new Zoom Q3HD which sells for close to $250. However, if you are looking for an outstanding audio recorder with standard definition (640x480 pixel 30 frames per second) video, you would be hard pressed to find a better device, especially at the price (mid $90 range) at the time of this review.
