  • I normally shoot with an SLR--Canon 5D Mk IV or sometimes a 7D Mk II. I\'ve owned several small cameras aimed at pro photographers, like the G12, G16, G7X and G7X Mk II. All are great little point-and-shoots, but I\'ve found I never have a use for them. The images aren\'t good enough to sell and I\'m not one for snapshots; they\'re too noisy to use shooting bands in bars (my hobby) and don\'t have enough reach to get near the stage. The G7X Mk II would probably take a decent landscape shot but that means a tripod to keep the ISO down. . .and I just don\'t bother. But this camera, with it\'s zoom capability, offers something different. The image quality isn\'t quite up to the other point-and-shoots but y\'know, it\'s not bad. It requires good light, with it\'s f/6.9 aperture at full zoom, and I wish it could shoot raw. But given those limitations, it still allows me to shoot things I can\'t or won\'t shoot with an SLR.That claim of a \"40X zoom\" is a little duplicitous--they\'re multiplying from the widest range and not from the 50mm we usually consider normal. It\'s really more like 20 times, from 24-960mm equivalent. However, that\'s like mounting a Sigma 150-600 on a 7D Mk II--and that\'s a serious commitment to the shoot. With the SX730 I can wander down to the beach and have a realistic chance of snapping a bird photo, or a surfer. Holding the camera steady at full zoom is the biggest challenge, but I\'m getting the hang of it and I\'m pleasantly surprised just how good the image stabilization is. I think there\'s another mode I could try that would improve that, too, but I\'ve hardly left P and Av. The macro capability is good; my closeup of the flower looked great in Lightroom but lost some detail when compressed--I think that\'s where the lack of raw data really hurts. The photo of my old film camera what slightly sharpened in Lightroom, along with color/contrast/clarity but I think you can see it\'s pretty good--and I shot that at full zoom and 1/25th of a second! (It took a few tries, though.) Shooting in shade I was able to bring down the highlights and raise the shadows, so the bit depth must be pretty good. The musician shot. . .well, the camera had just arrived and I didn\'t have the focus down--I think it could do a sharper pic. The nice thing is, I shot the show with a 70-200 on my full-frame, which means I was able to get shots like this from 5 times the distance. Can\'t wait to try it in a big concert venue (where I probably couldn\'t bring an SLR anyway). It\'ll require good stage lighting, though; no question.I\'ve only had it a couple of days and used it on two shoots; photos are attached. I see other reviewers have had faulty copies--mine has been flawless so far. Battery life seems to be about 250 shots. Haven\'t done much with the video yet. To summarize: this doesn\'t come close to a 5D4 image but it\'s pretty close to the G7X Mk II in good lighting, and that zoom range allows shots the G7X just can\'t do.
  • Ok, so, we all know this isn\'t going to be the best camera available. I also have a Canon G7X Mark ii & Mark iii. Of course, they are better in most cases. But, this Powershot has it\'s place too! For one, the zoom is amazing. Be sure to bring a tripod for the zoom! Outdoors with good lighting the images and videos are great! I make YouTube videos, and sometimes I use this camera when I know I will be outside in bright light while filming and I think I may also need some zoom. When the lights go down, the video quality is going to suffer. Pictures are still ok with flash. Basically, if the zoom is important to you, this camera will give you amazing results in sunlight, ok results indoors in lighting, and mediocre results in dim and low lighting. If you want something better and don\'t care as much about a lot of zoom, go for a G7X.
  • I took this camera on safari in Africa. The zoom was amazing. A leopard photo at 100 feet was enlarged into at 18x24 canvas.....you can see each whisker. It is quick, easy to use, and downloaded to my phone in seconds. I highly recommend.
  • I needed to replace my old camera - a Panasonic Lumix - because of persistent issues of dust on the CCD and in the lens, one of the most common complaints for the entire line. I have had Nikon SLR and DSLR cameras in the past but I decided to get the Canon this time, due to good reviews. The camera is solid, feels good in my hand. However, it is not the most easy to use camera I have ever had, and MUCH more complex that the shooting menu for the Lumix line.Let me first say that the lens quality and picture quality is excellent. I dearly love the 40X telephoto capability and while I would like an eyepiece the LCD screen is pretty bright and generally easy to see outdoors. I had several specific complaints, the most important being that in Shutter mode you cannot set the shutter speed and assume that the camera will not override your choice. This IS what shutter mode is supposed to do, right? And it is critical to one of the more common tasks that I have with this camera. After REPEATED emails with the service people I finally ended up with a straightforward comment from a technician that confirmed that the camera is built to override my setting. My concern was that there was a defect with the camera. The second major area of disappointment is the Macro mode, which I have yet to figure out. It does not seem to actually do anything in terms of getting me closer to my subject. Although it is too early to tell about long term lens integrity, I would have high hopes based on the \'feel\' . I am still trying to decide if the deficiencies are worthy keeping the camera.
  • I bought this as a travel camera, something better than relying on my phone, with the need for a super fast quickdraw for sudden photo opportunities--it delivered, spectacularly. The speed from off to ready to shoot was a couple of seconds, the flip back for selfie mode came in handy way more than I thought it would, and the video mode was really very good. Personally, I loved the bluetooth hookup to my phone. I would dump the photos to my phone every night on vacation and then just wi-fi them from the phone up to Google Photos. Backed up every night, I never worried about losing the camera. I used the 128gb sd card, and with 4500 photos and several videos it still isn\'t full. I did buy a spare battery, which came in handy for the one day I actually drained it. It was also nice for charging one while using the other. I almost never needed the digital zoom, as the optical on this is almost absurdly good. Does decently in low-light with no strobe, but a tripod would have helped. The strobe deploy is manual, so you can make sure to force it off when shooting in art galleries and the like. Buy a lens cleaner brush for it, as you don\'t want to risk damaging the lens by blowing on it or wiping it down. Overall, great camera--I look forward to using it on my next trip.
