- When, decent cameras became commonplace in smart phones, that took a lot of the novelty out of photography. For the past four years, I have not bothered to bring a separate camera with me when we go to interesting places. But now, that playful special sense of discovery has returned for me, via the Nikon p600.A couple months ago I started the search for a Super Zoom camera. I briefly considered the Nikon p600, but was put off by some of the reviews I read. From there I tested the Nikon L830, the Olympus SP100 and the Fujifilm Finepix S1. Each of them had major issues which were deal breakers. And so strangely...all paths led me back to the p600.I could write a pretty long review with a long list of things I love about this camera. But I\'ll just limit to you some things that stand out for me.✔ It is easily the one camera in the super zoom category that allows me to fully express myself artistically. I feel very connected with it and enjoy working it\'s different capabilities to their fullest. This camera has personality that I did not find in other candidates so I considered.✔ It uses and non-proprietary standard micro USB for charging. So I did not have to buy an extra cable to go along with my external battery charger.✔ It features manual focusing using a dial that is as close to an SLR and I think you can get.✔ There are many well-thought-out features such as the ability to move the autofocus target anywhere you want without having to point the camera in that direction.✔ There are books available on Amazon that are aimed specifically at helping new owners to get the very best results from the use of this camera, fully exploiting its power and flexibility. I very much appreciate that they allow you to go far beyond what\'s in the owners manual.The one thing I hate: The software that comes with it for downloading photos is simply abysmal. It hardly runs on my fast computer which has 16 GB of RAM. Fortunately, Picasa works great!The Nikon p600 can be used as a point-and-shoot that you always use on auto mode. But there is a huge universe of creative possibilities when you venture out to use some of the other capabilities that it has.That being said, I think people who want to dive into this camera and then fuss with all the dials...expecting the camera to do what they want...are going to be out of luck. You have to know the camera in order to avoid frustration that comes from using different settings incorrectly, and worst of all blaming the camera for poor results. The learning curve is not nearly as steep with an SLR, but there is a learning curve.
