Olympus TG-5 Waterproof Camera with 3-Inch LCD, Black
- Took this vacationing with me, and went snorkeling with it. Did its job admirably, though I have to say underwater pictures are difficult to take, between the skittish fishes and not being able to stabilize yourself amongst the waves. I was pretty happy overall with my travel buddy, and I looove how this is a tough camera with built-in GPS. Yes it took forever for it to lock the GPS signal because I was halfway around the globe, but once it did, I was very pleased to have my photos show their geotag upon importing onto my iPhone using the Olympus app and built-in wifi.Form factor of this camera is a decent size, and I could still pocket it despite being bulkier than other options I\'ve considered. I decided to go for a \"tough\" camera because I would like something that could do something better than my phone can aside from take better pictures. So I identified being able to confidently carry it around with me and not have to treat it like a precious thing (I mean, the price tag is still a little precious), be able to go underwater with it, and be able to good macro shots for fun hobby things.Speaking of macro, if you get this camera and would be interested in taking macro photography, this is a fun camera to use, but I highly recommend you also get the LG-1 accessory for so you can really place the camera right up against the subject (or surface) you are taking a photo of and zoom to maximum and still be able to take the shot. Please see my attached photos of my Timex weekender chrono watch, rotring mechanical pencil, and what a rain shell\'s fabric looks like.
- The Olympus TG5 replaced a Nikon AW100. The picture quality for the TG5 did not seem as good to me as the ancient AW100. The TG5 shutter trigger button popped out in the first 60-days, but was replaced at no charge by Olympus. The zoom lever became difficult to use after about a year. The finger tab on the battery door broke off. The lens cover looks much more scratched than my ancient AW100. The rotating mode switch would often move as it was jammed into a pocket, which meant that I would not get the photo if I did not notice the unintended mode change. Strap attachment on only one end of the camera made for difficult use, particularly when in the field and moving fast. The time did not update reliably as I crossed time-zones. Finally, the camera stopped working - it simply will not power on. My ancient AW100 continues to work.Good features of the TG5: Super fast on and off. The modes were easy to use. The self-timer gave you a lot of nice options. Pressing INFO displays the time and a compass, without needing to power on the camera. Pressing INFO for a long time turns on a flashlight. Battery life was never a problem. The larger size made it easier to hold.
- I am torn between rating 4 or 5 stars. I would take a point off for a smaller zoom range than the competition and the WiFi works only with mobile devices but the images this camera produces definitely rates 5 stars for a \"rugged\" camera. The images are far better than my previous camera and nearly as good as my SLR at the same ISO. Also check out the \"Comparometer\" on Imaging Resource. The image quality is helped by fewer but larger - brighter (12) megapixels than many other cameras and a F2.0 lens that can permit a lower ISO setting for a given light level. As mentioned by another review the macro and microscope modes are amazing. There are some real nice accessories for the Stylus Tough line of cameras that extend its capabilities and usefulness. I am hoping that Adobe will update Photoshop with the ability to import the TG-5 RAW files and won\'t try to force users into Creative Cloud. I discovered on a recent trip to Hawaii that my previous \"waterproof\" camera no longer is and there are enough bad reviews on ALL waterproof-rugged cameras that I invested 13% of the cost in a SquareTrade 4-Year Camera Accident Protection Plan with my purchase.
- I bought this based on the recommendation of a friend in one of the PSA Fine Art Study Groups. He posted a beautiful closeup shot of a flower and touted his new T-5 camera. Based on his recommendation, I purchased one solely for macro shots. The camera also has underwater capabilities but I haven\'t used it for that. I did buy the extra Olympus light ring for the camera. The in-camera focus stacking feature is amazing and so are the capabilities provided by the microscope mode which provides me with the ability to capture images of small things that I had never been able to photograph before. The price is good and the camera is very durable. The only downside is that the image file size is a bit small so cropping isn\'t a good option without negatively impacting the resolution of the image. For the price, this camera can\'t be beat and it is truly state-of-the-art. I recommend it if you are interested in close-up photography but be sure an also buy the little LED light ring which is inexpensive but important for close-up photography.
- I use it for macro mostly. Only problem with macro, is the flash is so bright it washes out pic. Even the little LED lights are too bright and create terrible highlights that ruin the color and contrast of shot.. But, it does take pretty darn good macro shots so happy with that. Fairly easy to use and get used to. My screen side has scratches on in though. I thought it would be tougher. It hasn\'t been through more than pics in my yard, so... Never took it underwater. Battery life could be a little better, but not bad since I\'m using the led lights for every shot in microscope mode. All in all I\'m happy with my purchase. I use it more than my 2000 dollar camera.
