Canon PowerShot SX520 16Digital Camera with 42x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 3-Inch LCD (Black)
- I purchased this camera for my daughter because it\'s the same as she uses in her photography class, and I\'m positive that I ordered, and paid for, a new camera; however, based on the packaging - some bubble wrap and not a manufacturer box, I believe that I received a return or used camera. I appreciated the battery charger for it; however, ours was missing the neck strap - problematic when the user is a middle school child, and I have to worry about it being dropped. We ended up checking a bunch of stores trying to find a neck strap for it (seems no one carries them), and surprise, had to order a strap from Amazon. My daughter hasn\'t complained about anything not working on the camera, so it seems that all is well - I just don\'t appreciate receiving a not- new product missing a vital piece when I pay for a new product and all the pieces. Due to time constraints, I did not return.
- I recently purchased this Canon SX-520 HS digital camera to replace an older Nikon digital camera. I had an 2 older Canon SX-510 HS digital cameras last year & got a lot of good photos with those 2 digital cameras before they crapped out. Since this is a modestly upgraded/updated digital camera over the SX-510 HS & uses the same batteries, I figured that I would give this camera a try since the older & problematic Nikon digital camera I replaced & sold with this camera had the same size 42X optical zoom lens.Good points so far is: pretty easy to use, takes pretty good outdoor photos, menu is fairly simply to navigate, takes the same batteries the prior SX-510 HS took and has a nice 42X optical zoom lens....up from 30X with the older Canon SX-510 HS camera. Megapixels also increased a bit with this newer Canon camera also.Bad areas so far: flash slow to reload after taking each photo at night or low-light situations, questionable photo quality indoors or in low-light situations. This camera uses the easy to find SD cards for photo storage and overall, this Canon camera is a decent upgrade from the prior model from Canon. It\'s also slightly larger and the video control on the backside was moved slightly closer to the side....reducing the chances of me making a video my mistake [a big problem I had with the SX-510 HS Canon camera]. There is no optical viewfinder on this camera....only a decent-sized rear fixed LCD screen as a viewfinder.....which is fine for me. I know many like the swiveling/tilting rear LCD monitor for taking self photos or other photos...but for my purposes, the fixed into the camera rear LCD viewfinder works just fine. If I want self photos of me, I have a larger Canon digital camera that has the rear LCD screen that flips and swivels out. This digital camera does have a variety of manual settings possible as well. This camera is my \"everyday\" camera for scenic outdoor and other photos. I gave this camera 5 of 5 stars already because in the few days I have played around with this digital camera, it seems to work flawlessly and quick. Video quality is pretty decent for this camera also. It won\'t take DSLR quality photos, but if you need a decent super zoom digital camera without the hassles of changing lens, this camera should do the job fairly well. I may do an update to my review as time rolls one.
- I have always been a Canon fan, I was looking for a replacement for my SX170, but frankly I was a little disappointed when I opened the box of the SX520. Granted I did not do any research, just went with past history that of course I would love a Canon.Cons:• Physical lens caps rather than the built in automatic cap of the smaller camera. This is my biggest issue, I hate having to take it on and off, that was something I did not miss when I sold my SLR. No built-in cap allow for more dirt to get to the lens if it takes you a minute to put it back on. For this reason alone I am knocking it down a star.• Size – bulkier than I was expecting – there is no way to put this one in a pocket – it does fit in my purse.• Feels like it is cheaply made – but it is actually very sturdy – I have thrown it in bags with no case and knocked it around construction sites and there is not a scratch on itPros:• Phenomenal photo quality• Great optical zoom [Note: just turn off the digital, you will be much happier and can always make those extra zooms on the computer]• Easily focus even when optical zoom is fully extended and it is low light and no flash conditions.• Lightweight – I can easily handle it with one hand• Very intuitive to use• Fun features like creative shots or continuous shoot• Long battery life – it is used almost daily with lots of on and off and review and the battery usually lasts at least 2 weeks for meOther reviews mentioned that there was no manual included, mine was in the box. They also mentioned that it will not do several shots per second – this is incorrect, you just need to look at the manual.Overall, I am going to keep this camera and know that it will work well when I want real pictures rather than pictures from my phone. A lot of camera for not a lot of price.
