Nikon Coolpix S9300 16.0 MP Digital Camera - Black (Discontinued by Manufacturer)
- First things first !!! The two best things I liked about this camera are whopping 18X optical zoom and the 1080p HD movies it shoots.Being a hobbyist photographer, I myself own a Nikon D7000 with a couple of lenses which I use every time I try my hands on photography. Wanted to buy an easy to use point-and-shoot for a friend. Being a Nikon fan for life, my work on selecting the manufacturer was cut short. Now, all I had to choose was a model with decent resolution (above 8MP), good optical zoom and the capacity to use Li-Ion battery (I hate the cameras which use AA batteries!!!). This helped me zero down on a few available Nikon cameras. Finally I decided to but the S9200 and it was available at a good discount (49% when I bought it and its 59% now !!!!). Before handing it over to a friend, I tried my hands on it to make sure I got the right product. This camera didn\'t disappoint me at all. With its CMOS sensor, the clarity of the pictures is unmatched and 16MP gives you pictures which will not pixelate even if you zoom in to its limits. As I said my favorite feature on the camera in its 18X optical zoom, meaning you can take macro shots of flowers (my favorite subjects while shooting with DSLR) with ease. This also comes in handy when you want to take shots of animals/birds/butterflies from a distant so that you don\'t disturb/scare them. 1080p HD movie is ideal to shoot any live scene (although that\'s not my favorite thing), but can be used with ease during any function and party. You see the effect of 1080p when you watch it on a PC or TV monitor. Although not very important, the high resolution screen shows you the images at awesome clarity. Two additional features I liked were the in-camera editing and panorama. With the in camera edit, you can add various effects to your photos and make them more appealing even before you copy them to your computer. I did use \"Easy Panorama Mode\" to make a panorama and was surprised to see the camera itself stitched all the images and I didn\'t need any post processing using third-party software !! This is something which many people would love to experiment with. A few other features worth mentioning are the Nikon\'s innovative VR image stabilization, 7 fps continuous shooting and considerably long battery life.A few people have listed endless number of issues with this camera. My point is that if you have all these problems, why not buy a DSLR instead of point and shoot. At this price, one cannot ask for features which are available in a DSLR camera. Another user complains that it is difficult to hold the camera still when you are zoomed out at 18x. Isn\'t that a practical problem???? You will have this with any point-and-shoot, because of its small size. I would suggest to use a tripod in such cases, instead of blaming camera which offers something which human beings can handle !!! A few other complaints by various users just make me laugh. It seems that they have mentioned those issues just for the sake of mentioning!! I feel that this camera provides you more than enough features for a starter or casual shooter at a reasonable price. I am happy that I got this (and my friend is also happily using it).
- Gerald\'s Digital Camera Repair had several cameras in my price range with the features that I required. I did not know the difference between \"L\", \"S\" or any of the other Cool Pix Series that were available. Comparing all the features between the series was mind boggling LOL. I sent an email to Gerald\'s Digital Camera Repair listing the features I wanted, my price range, and described what functions were most important to me. Received a response later the same evening explaining the pros and cons of the series, the highlights of a few cameras he recommended, and other tips to consider when making my decision. I chose the Nikon CoolPix S9300 and am IMMENSELY PLEASED with my purchase. It arrived with several pages of special instructions for shortcuts and easy to understand techniques specifically for the CoolPix S9300. By far, this is the best camera I have ever owned ! I would never have had the courage to choose one so advanced in comparison to the simple \"point and shoot\" I had before. With the information provided by Gerald\'s Camera; I realized that the CoolPix S9300 can be as simply or as complex a camera as you need. It practically teaches you itself. THANK YOU and Kudos to this amazing shop!
- this camera was a replacement for a 1 1/2 y.o. Lumix DMC-SZ1 with 10x optical zoom and 14 mp. the lumix developed dark spots on the sensor that showed up on bright images so it was retired. as a comparison, the nikon is a bit thicker but about the same length and width which is nice for a pocket camera. the display is good and controls are simple and easy to use. image quality under maximum zoom is not as good as the Lumix nor does the 18x rating of the nikon seem to be any more than the 10x of the lumix. under lower zoom conditions, the nikon seems to have better color outdoors but produces an orange hue under flourescent lighting, even with white balance set to either auto OR flourescent. using manual white balance (or Photoshop) you can make the color better. otherwise, I would say a bit better in macro mode (which I use frequently for work) and overall the autofocus seems faster and less finicky than the lumix. the big surprise however was the big selection of HD movie mode - not only does it record directly into iPhone compatible movies but also provides slow-motion recording at 1/2 and 1/4. it also does high speed at 2x! low light photos are only marginally better than the lumix but on the nikon you can improve the quality by locking the ISO speed to max out at either 400 or 800 - another great feature in my mind. so far I have only had the camera for 2 days but this is probably my 20th digital camera and I use them almost daily for work and pleasure. if it continues to impress me, I\'ll come back and give it 5 stars but for now it only gets 4 due to low light performance and marginal resolution at high zoom levels.
