Nikon COOLPIX P950
- The product is lightweight and easy to use. The multiple setting types are excellent. We especially like the Bird and landscape options. There are also beach, dusk, and numerous more. Taking a picture of the moon and actually being able to SEE the craters on the moon is exceptional.
- Solid camera for birding. It allows you to zoom in on and identify birds from a distance that you couldn’t with binoculars alone. But also don’t expect the level of detail and crispness you’d get from a full frame DSLR camera. Remember: it’s still a point and shoot, though a powerful one. And if you take photos at a long distance at full zoom, you’ll need a tripod or monopod, since despite the camera’s image stabilization, the slightest shake will cause blur. I can get really nice photos for subjects that are relatively still in good light, especially at closer range (though any cropping and you quickly lose sharpness). However, it’s not ideal for flying birds or in low light. Overall, a good tool for the price.
- When my Coolpix p900 started showing its age (mostly in the LCD display malfunctioning and the zoom acting out) I decided to upgrade to the p950 because, well, I really did like my p900 so, why not?To say that I am disappointed would put it mildly. in the p950, Nikon has done away with the *birdwatching* menu option and bird photography is literally all I do. As a result, focusing on small (sometimes *very* small) and active (sometimes *very* active) wildlife has become a crapshoot. I tried switching to the *sports* setting instead, however I do not like burst photography as it tends to lose crispness in the process so, no bueno.Another issue I\'ve run into is the processor simply \"freezing\" on me with a message on the LCD display asking me to turn the camera off and on to reboot. Not exactly ideal when in the middle of a photography outing.Lastly, I will bring up the loss of sharpness when using the zoom. It\'s a problem others have already mentioned but I think it is worth reiterating. Of course, at full zoom, the p900 loses sharpness as well yet it seems to me that the p950 does a MUCH worse job of maintaining picture quality zoom-for-zoom. Also, colors seems a lot flatter with the p950 than they do with the p900 and I\'ve had to spend a lot more time post-processing pics to rebalance colors and exposure than I ever did with the previous model. On the upside, the \"dusk/dawn\" setting is absolutely fantastic as it auto-corrects aperture like no other so I guess, there\'s that?In short, this camera, which I had bought for bird photography, simply does not work for me. I am returning it and buying another p900 instead.
